Stripe Fees Explained — Every Charge, Simply (2026)

Stripe's pricing looks simple but has several layers. This guide breaks down every fee type — processing, international, currency conversion, disputes, subscriptions — in plain English.

The Core Fee: Percentage + Fixed

Every Stripe card payment uses the same formula:

Fee = (Amount × percentage) + fixed fee
Net = Amount − Fee

USA example: $100 charge
Fee = ($100 × 2.9%) + $0.30 = $2.90 + $0.30 = $3.20
Net = $100 − $3.20 = $96.80

The percentage covers Stripe's margin and the card network interchange fee. The fixed fee covers Stripe's per-transaction infrastructure cost. Both are deducted automatically before Stripe deposits funds into your bank account.

International Cards — The Hidden Cost

The international card surcharge (+1.5%) surprises many merchants. It applies whenever a customer's card is issued in a different country from your Stripe account — even if both parties use USD.

Example: A US merchant charges a UK customer $100 using a UK-issued Visa card.
Fee = 4.4% + $0.30 = $4.70 (not $3.20). That's $1.50 more per $100 — on $5,000/month international revenue, that's $75/month extra.
